Hi, I’ve been thinking about the way high nitrates affect fish and trying to think how it would affect humans in a way. Could it be like if I had a couple of beers each and everyday it wouldn’t kill me straightaway but if I carried on drinking those two beers each and everyday then it’s not going to be good for me long term in regards to my immune system and eventually it will kill me . Just a thought

I would imagine something along those lines never actually thought about it I would t use beer as an example as I can’t imagine such a good friend being bad for me lol if I had to have a guess I’d go along the lines hiv attacks Immune system until something minor kills that would normally be fought off

Yes... I would imagine so. High nitrates are more dangerous to fish (take Cory’s for example) in a short amount of time, whereas beer is more dangerous over a long period of time.

(Not that I have/do drink beer, I’m underage...B-))

I don't think beer is a good comparison since nitrates are a reduction of poisonous ammonia/nitrite. A better comparison might be with diluted antifreeze or arsenic. Small amounts of these will kill you, but it will take time!

In the case of alcohol, given enough over time surely can cause liver damage and lead to death, but unlikely that a couple of beers a day will do too much harm.

Footnote: I am of age (and then some) and I do drink beer - not a lot, but what I do, I like!!!

But here is a good place to pitch my Blog post on Lowering Aquarium Nitrates.
