High Nitrate

Hi Everyone,

On Saturdays i sort out mum's fish tank. its about 110l.

i did a water test and the ammonia is 0 nitrite is 0 but nitrate is over 40ppm. I took out 30l. did a water test on sunday morning and the nitrate was the same. so i took i took out 40l, after a few hours i did a water test and the results were the same.

I have a FLUVAL internal filter (quite big) and an Eheim Ecco 2234. the Ehein's pipes have got gunk in.

Could it be possible that the ehein is putting nitrate back into the tank? I don't think it's doing its job anyway because the in pipe is quite baggy.

any comments would be appreciated.

NB - before i installed the eheim filter - the nitrate was ok about 10ppm.

How many gallons is the tank and does it have live plants in it? Are the plants healthy?

The problem is not going to be the eheim. It cannot put nitrate back in the water.

Have you tested your tap water nitrate? Mine is well over 20 and probably nearer 40.

Finally, how good is the test kit? I had a brand new one test RO water at 100ppm. I no longer trust the nitrate tests at all...

andywg....what is the pink fish? is it real? I love it.

It's a Striated, or striped, or zebra, or splitlure frogfish. Scientific name is Antennarius striatus and it is real. More pics are here: http/www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=147577

Hi everyone,

tap water is about 10ppm. tank is over 100 litres.

test kit seams to be ok - i've got the testing strips too which also came out with the same result.

I've turned off the external filter and will do a test tomorrow (wednesday) and a water change if nessary. if the external filter is the problem i'm gonna sell it on ebay. doesnt make much difference with it running anyway.
