i cant get any phdown locally to me. ph at 8.3 in tropical tank.anything i can use to lower this. please help

Bogwood and peat I hear are good. But if that is the normal pH in your area there is a good chance that any fish you buy in that area will be somewhat adjusted. Good news is, you have perfect water for African Cichlids :) If it makes you feel any better, the pH of my tap is 9 and I keep fish of all types and they are well adjusted and doing very well.

There are many things that naturally make the water acidic, bogwood and peat do work well, but fish respirating makes the water more acidic.
Don't worry it should become naturally acidic over time.

By the way pH 8.3 is high alkalinity not acidity.

This is a common mistake, most people presume that the higher the number the more acidic somthing is, when the opposite is in fact true. Here is a handy chart to help you visualise (I use this a lot).

Not to pick nits, but the term alkalinity refers to KH and buffering capacity. Water which has a pH above 7.0 is referred to as being alkaline. While the two words are similar, they do not refer to the same things.

So Aqua Tom really meant to say that pH 8.3 is alkaline not acid :)
