I've set up my new tank and I'm really pleased with how it looks except for that my heater is very visible. It's on the back wall diagonally but I was just wondering where everyone else puts there's to give an overall better finished product?

I put mine as low down as possible, either horizontal or at a very shallow angle.

Have to say.. I dont get the whole 'have heater at an angle' thing? I only did this once in one tank and I went through so many heaters.

Generally I have them in a back corner and straight or maybe slightly wonky if i cant reach properly... or right up next to a filter or inlet pipe. Then hide with a plant or some cunningly placed bogwood that doesnt restrict flow.

The reason you place a heater horizontal or diagonal is because heat rises... if it is placed vertically the heat rises giving the internal thermostat a false reading that the water is already hot enough. If you place it at an angle the heat rises away from the heater and doesn't affect the thermostat.

Oh.... and I aim to cover mine with tall plants.

Good point!... wonder why mine never had incorrect readings then!? Had numerous thermometers to check. Maybe they were at a slight enough 'wonky' to make this ok LOL my idea of straight is usually slightly off. No one asks me to hang pictures on walls any more

Mbou ... Lol .
In my 5ft i have one heater in the side walls and in my others i also have it diaganolly along the back wall though did used to have it straight down with no problems in all honesty although i did read it transfers the heat better diaganolly hence why i changed.
As stated, i place mine lower down or try to hide behind plants, ornaments, etc.

I am just going to buy external heaters for my tanks as I don't like the look of heaters either (although the Fluval E series look better than some). Only downside is that you need an external filter of course.

I haven't put my heaters horizontally. You can't hide them as easy. Thermometer on the other side of the tank show all is well.

My external is the best thing I have purchased.
