I've been keeping tropical fish for a year or so planning to get a goldfish (in a separate tank) any tips :)

What kind of goldfish were you thinking of getting, there are quite a few species.

Generally most goldfish needs large tanks.

Post what species you would like or a list perhaps then we can give better advice for you

Make sure it's a large tank.
For fancies you want 30g for the first fish, then 15g for each additional. So say if you want 3 fancy goldies you want to have a 60g.

You want very strong filtration as they're messy.
If you're feeding them flake, put it in the water or soak it first, if they eat it straight from the top they can gulp in air and can become bloated.

Other than that..I'm not sure. I've not had the pleasure of having them. Hopefully someone with more experience can give you some more tips! :)

Thanks, I'm not sure yet, haven't even bought a tank although if they need 30 gallons each I might get a different kind of fish

:hi: to the forum.

What size tank are you looking at buying?

Before adding any fish, make sure to fishless cycle your tank, following the guide linked in my signature.

Hi welcome aboard! I love red caps and pearl scales! Wish they'd remain young forever :D

Thanks for the welcome :)
Goldfish are so lovely but its surprising how much room they need, but its also surprising how big they get I suppose.
Planning to something small, 10-15 litres? Are there any cold water fish suitable for a tank of this size, or shall I get a 3 or 4 small (neon tetras or something, nothing bigger than 2 inches) tropical fish?

10 to 15 litre tank is a pretty small tank, 2.5 to 4 gals, would say there are a few choices but not many though.

Neons are not suitable for that sized tank am afraid, they may be small but very active so they need quite a bit of swimming space.

Have a look at this, that may help you.
