Hi my name is Christina. I'm 28 years old and live in Indiana. I have always loved fish. As soon as I saw the types of whales and fish and sharks and other life in watering knew I wanted to study fish but sadly my life got worse as a child and I never was able to make my dream come true. So I have a 10 gal tropical fish tank. I have 2 neon glass fish and 6 zebra neon fish. One pleco, one apple snail, and a small little catfish type fish. My goal is to make them as comfy and happy as possible.

The reason I joined is I need information on the dietary needs of the pleco and snail. The algae drop food is ok but I know they both need the correct nutrients to help them stay healthy. I read that plecos can eat a variety of veges and some fruit, but snails prefer old lettuce or rotting veges? And bogwood is essential for the pleco. But is it safe to put small bits of old romain or apple in the tank with the zebras and glass fish?

Anyway, just trying to figure it all out.

Hi Minpin welcome to the forum :)

Unfortunately your tank is not the best at the moment. Is the Pleco a common? If so I fear your Pleco will vastly outgrow your tank very quickly. The Catfish you have can you give some more descriptions or a photo as there are so many out there I am worried it could be an other large growing fish or it could be a type of catfish that need to be in a group.

The Zebra Danios, though small, are very very active fish and would really benefit from a much bigger tank. They will survive in this tank but really there are better fish suited to this tank.

The Glass Fish and the Snail are probably okay in this tank but again not the ideal mix.

Im really really sorry to have to give the bad news but I figured its best to learn early on :)

I supose really you have a couple of choices and they are all pretty drastic, again I am really sorry about this. Just wish we had been able to help sooner... Option 1 - rehome the fish, potentially keeping the glass fish and keep the 10g tank and equipment. Option 2 - get a bigger tank, at least 4 foot long for the Danios and add more suitable fish around them, though if your pleco is a common even a 4 foot tank will not be big enough for life. Option 3 - get a larger tank and rehome your fish... I know this last one seems very drastic but my thinking is - you obviously have a passion for a good mix of fish in a tank and in a 10g tank this is pretty tough to do so perhaps a more manageable sized tank of around 30 gallons which would be an excellent home for the glass fish, snail and potentially the catfish. It also allows for a good mix of species and a slight array of sizes etc.

Hope that helps and again Im really sorry its such a negative welcome but we are always very happy to see new members :D

I have been trying to figure out how to add photos

My pleco died... :( and then the glass fish overnight got this weird looking white salt/ bubble stuff on them. I'm not sure if it was ick or something else. They looked pretty bad so I had to flush them. It has been a horrible couple days. I found a small zebra fish had somehow got pinned under a plant and died. (All in the last 36 hours) and now one of my other zebras have that same white bubble or salt loking stuff all over them. My snail is happy though. What do I feed him to keep him healthy?
