hi i got my 2 gold fish in big tank and i been keeping and breeding bettas for 5 years now lol i only got the one male now as i down sized when i moved house i now got a new 4 foot tank thank setting up at mo

sounds good :) what type of goldfish are they?

you may have a problem them

if it is a fancy goldfish, meaning it has "two tails" / is double finned, 20 gallons for one, and ten gallons for each additional goldfish is fine.

if it is a standard goldfish, with only 1 tail, this is a pond fish and is not suitable at all for a home aquarium. these fish will grow well over a foot in length.

they are nice and tiny and cute in the pet store....because they are babies. if you have standard goldfish then even your new four foot tank is not a suitable long term home for them.

btw, what is the gallon size tank they are in now...saying it is a "big" tank doesn't really describe it all that well....a lot of people think 10 gallons is big!

are u sure you don't have Koi?
alot of ppl (uneducated ppl) mistake them for "long gold fish" yes i'm serious.
:welcome!:\
oh that no work?

well then, Welcome!

look like anything on there?

or any of those?

Why do people mistake Koi for Goldfish?
:/
Isn't that like mistaking a housecat from a mountain lion?

we were not implying you were stupid. it is actually a very easy assumption which is why I keep asking about what types you have and the gallon size you are keeping them in.

they are related much closer than a house cat and a lion - - they are both a member of the carp family, originally bred from the common carp and then different characteristics began emerging into the different types we see today.

and if both sold as babies, they DO look just like a pretty goldfish.

Okay, I get it now. Can people pet Koi? I heard it's very bad to pet a fish in it's tank, so why is okay to pet a Koi in a pond?

Most people have pefume or lotion on their hands and other such contaminants... it will dissipate more given the amount of water in a pond vs a tank. Unless your hands are clean and free of chemicals you should never touch a fish regardless of species.
