Hi,

I'm an absolute newbie when it comes to fish, I've been looking and contemplating for some time now.

What am I best to start with, tropical/freshwater? how big a tank should I choose? I have no idea about tank setup.... I'm in no rush, so if you can point me in the right direction

biggest tank you can get/ afford / fit in a space... more volume of water less likely something will go wrong. e.g a dead fish you forget to find pollutes your water more in a smaller tank than in a larger one.

tropical freshwaters good... you can go with cold water but i think tropical fish look nicer

tank set up... filter. heater. light (optional but recommended)not sure if thats the sort of thing you were looking for on advice on ;p

do you know about the fish cycle?

I'd suggest you have a read of the articles in the beginner's resource centre (the link for it is in my sig), Hitmanfan; a good place to start you off wih some basic information :good:

First off, Welcome! Secondly, try looking around the internet and forums and getting names and types of fish you like and make a set up that slanted towards their liking! Depending on your budget, but even with restrictions you can still have a beautiful tank!

I have some information for you to make your first tank go smoothly. Here it is-
Research ResearchRESEARCH

I can't emphasize that enough. It will save you a lot of headache.

How big is your tank? If you're going tropical, I'd suggest platies. Wonderful, friendly fish IMO. Really pretty, too.

This is the part of the hobby I like best... the planning of a new aquarium! My best advice to you would be to do alot of research and if you are unsure of something, come here and ask before you buy fish. Cycle your filter! This is the most important step. If you don't cycle, you WILL have problems down the road. As far as fish suggestions, it all depends on what you like and your water chemistry. I look at online fish shops or go to a lfs. When I see something I like, I don't get it right away. I research what that particular fish needs and how to keep it happy. If I think I can make a good home for the fish, I set the tank up to their liking and introduce them slowly. Good luck and welcome to the forum! :good:
