hello everyone!

had my aquarium up and running for a week with no probs - got 4 platys today - however one looks like it has fin rot - one fin is a white stump and its dorsal fin is close to its body, its tail is about half the size of the others. Any thoughts?

Anyway my tank is a 29L with a fair few decorations and hidey holes :)

got to love how curious these fish are - get close to the tank and they all swim up and have a gander :)

:hi:

Was your tank cycled at all (by 'cycled' I mean did you do anything to the tank to start a bacterial colony growing in the filter before you added the fish)?

If you didn't, it's most likely you have a water quality problem and that is what's caused the fin rot.

Get some medicine for it from your local fish shop, and if you can get a test kit (one of the ones with a test tube, not the paper strips, as they're not very accurate) for ammonia.

In the meantime do a 50% water change every day, with warm dechlorinated water and have a read of the articles about cycling in the beginner's resource centre (the link for that is in my sig :good: )

Fluttermoth is right, your tank probably not cycled, which is leading to the fin rot problem. Lots of water changes and maybe some antibiotics. Welcome and good luck! :good:

tank was fully cycled with a bacterial additive for new aquariums. i bought the 4 Platys from pets at home (stupid idea methinks) and i hadn't noticed but this platy was already affected within the tank.

anyhoo, went back today to complain and i got a free bottle of pimafix, fish food and 2 free platys to introduce to the tank after a week of treatment. the two new platys will go in my other tank :)

Make sure to test your water regularly and good luck! :good:

well i'v just been noticing that although it does indeed have fin rot, one of the other females is a nipper - one of the platys that i got given at pets at home is pregnant with only a few days to go by the look of things - two black spots near her anal fin and shes squared off too :)

Welcome to the forum Antdabiker.
It sounds like you are going to be off to a rough start in the hobby. With 6 platies in a small tank like that you will want to do a 50% water change every few days for the next several weeks just to keep your fish healthy. There s a link in my signature area to a thread that describes fish-in cycling, which you are now facing with all of those fish.

As a side note: that is a sweet little bike as your avatar. I have moved on to road touring bikes but remember fondly when I had nice maneuverable bikes like that.

hey welcome to the forum, you've come to the right place! dont hesitate to ask questions.

as a general note, those bacterial additives in a bottle dont do anything! just a waste of money!

 :fun:
