Hi

Thanks for the reply. Some good tips there. Thanks

My Puffer likes frozen bloodworm and nibbles on prawn and mussle & snails. I changed the tank around

and he sulked for about three days was highly upset. Our tap water is about 7.8 is well. I do a

water change once every week. Maybe you can help with this question !!!! I have been told by a few people

that when you do a waterchange, one week you add salt the next week you don't that is to create how things

are in nature ( The Estuarys where the salt water mixes with the river water). Is this correct ?

You said the puffer is bored would it help to get him a mate or would they kill each other ?

Thanks again

Sabby

Sabby --

Changing the salinity is very good for the fish.

However, it is also very bad for the filter bacteria.

Normally, changing the salinity by one or two points on the specific gravity scale (e.g. 1.005 to 1.007, or 1.012 to 1.010) won't do any harm. But big changes, from 1.005 to 1.015 for example, will kill the bacteria even though they won't harm euryhaline, estuarine fish like scats, mollies, monos, or green puffers.

Cheers,

Neale

i don't think that was the intention at all, beside you didn't mind on the hello Neale thing but hey, i'm new here too. P.S. Neale you've got some wonderful advice. i've been doing a lot of reading your post.

Sabby, thanks for taking interest, i'm going to have to agree with Neale about the Salinity, keep it within .002 per change. i kinda keep mine around 1.010 SG most of the time, but that's me, if anything i'll add a little less (1.009) and do a 50% water change. He's been a little hardier than what people have led me to believe. I would NOT get him a mate as in another puffer, if you look at the LFS's or walmart (where i bought mine because he was so sad looking in that filthy F$@!ing tank and he was the only one with pretty much all his fins) most of them have little or no fins left, we saw some today that were about 2 1/2 to 3 inches and one didn't even have a tailfin, really sad that they cram these guys in together and don't care what happens to them, i'm from the South East Kansas area and visited a pet warehouse about 30 minutes away and i wouldn't buy a fish from there for nothing, filthy fish, dirty tanks, disease. just really bad that these guys have to suffer like that, one poor GSP's stomach was sagged in so badly i wish that i could of euthonized it myself to save it from suffering, some ppl need to be reincarnated as pets for ppl like the little girl on Finding NEMO. really sad but if you think he's lonely, you might get away with a pair of Mollies, they will stick to themselves and once it a while try to play with him, but be warned one day he might not feel like playing and feel like eating but it might be worth a try, mine was with a pair of mollies for quite a while after one of the mollies died, the other molly tried to play too much with little torpedo and i think made him nervous so i moved the molly to freshwater and bought another mate. just accumate them slowly from going to salt / fresh and vis versa, i use the cup and drip method. Good luck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you need any specific advise, feel free to PM me.
