just yesterday i found one of my platies dead in the bottom of my tank with a white spot on its head which wasnt there when it was alive and know today one of my guppies tail is slipt down the middle and it cant stay up the right way, what should i do for him and could these be related?

Tank size? Water parameters? Did you cycle the tank? If so, how? Tankmates? Anything added recently?

Hm. It could be either fin rot, ammonia poisoning, ich or uncycled tank syndrome.

Give us the exact params and well tell you

the tank is 16l (from memory, box long since gone with a lorrket in it to wires. but it may be smaller) its being running since june last year, lastest arivals were two more platies on the 16 of june this year. tank had a  around a 50% water change on sunday, which is about normal.

the guppy died

so now there are two male guppies, three black neons, and three platies along with an a changing number of snails.

also in the tank is some sort of plant that i dont know the name of and a skull and the bottom cover is gravel. i only have stuff to test the pH and its at 7 where it normally is

Hi sockers, and welcome.

The bad news, as I see it, is that your tank is far too small for that number of fish.  That group of fish would need at least 15 GALLONS, not liters.

Sorry to give you that news, but that's unfortunately the reality, as I see it.

(If you could tell us the parameters, we could tell you the volume.  or you could use the calculator linked at the top of the page.)

last time i listen to the people at the store.....
their like 10 fish that size would happly fit in there,
but wouldnt a problem have happened early? cause its been problem free this the start of the year just after my mum sucked the blue neons up with the siphon (4 of them while i was away) and since then ive casully brought the tank back to ten.

so i shouldnt buy anymore fish next time im near the aqurium?

Unfortunately it seems you have fallen into the trap of believing and following LFS advice, trust me, you are not the only one this has happened to, and you will not be the last either.

Happened to me as well, although just for live plants luckily for me.

Quite a few (not all of them mind you!) LFS will say just about anything you want to hear in order to sell you something.

Also a lot of staff who work in LFS (especially large chain stores) can be poorly trained or have no knowledge about good fishkeeping practices (there are some good LFS staff around too so don't dismiss their advice without researching first)

Thats the key, research and ask on this forum for opinions BEFORE buying any live stocking for your tank.

Lesson learned and just be wary of any advice given at LFS.

Good luck with your forage into fish keeping
