Hi. I'm New And Need Help With My Pirahanas

blimey weston handin out tips in a earlier thread you wanted to put two oscars in a 10 gal and hope they dont grow too big

I have noticed them exhibiting breeding behaviour through the glass of their seperated tanks so I will be rehoming them both (with a divider) into a 55 gallon.
So I could possibly be a piranha grandma soon! lol

I answered in your other thread but I'll copy/paste it in here also. :)

They're being territorial, if they were breeding they would turn almost black in color.

Piranhas will go to the edges of their territories and do that sideways dance to the others as a show of aggression to tell the others that this is his territory and stay out or else.

the larger one is sick over my smaller one (he won't move, just stares at the smaller one longingly and won't move unless she comes close to him)

Not sure how you can tell whether one is a female or not but I'm betting the larger one isn't looking longingly as in love but wants to get at the smaller one to show him who's boss.

i don't if i'm doing things wrong or i'm just lucky. but i got 3 pirahnas in a 50 gal tank with 2 managuenses, 2 green terrors, an electric blue dempsey, and a pleco. and they're all doing just fine together. in fact, one of the green terrors somehow got it in his head that he's a pirahna too and he swims around with them all day. now i'm not trying to say all of you who say you need at least 50 gal for pirahnas alone are wrong, but it's seemed to work out for me to put more than just the 3 pirahnas in there and still have a peaceful community (except the managuenses and the blue dempsey, for some reason that male managuense hates the blue).

How big are all of them?

By 3 piranhas I'm assuming they're red belly piranhas? They are extremely territorial and when they get larger they will start killing off others (including themselves) to make room for their territories. Managuense are sometimes territorial and sometimes sissies but they won't like the crowded conditions either way, either.

I hope for your cichlids sake you feed every day and even then it's not a sure thing because one day those piranhas will most likely just snap for no reason and you'll come home to a bunch of fish heads.

Glad it's working out for you but I would take out the 2 managuense and 3 piranhas asap.

Hi. I'm glad I found this forum and hopefully someone can help me.
I purchased 2 RB's from a pet store a month ago or so. Most of the people there were clueless as to what they needed, so I guessed 30 gallon would be large enough for 2 Pirahana..
Well last night I noticed the smaller of the 2 had suffered damage to his/her tailfin..assumingly it was from the larger more aggressive one.
Is this because the tank is too small..eek! Spent $200 on the tank and don't want to get another unless I have to.
Thanks if anyone can help *whimper*
Dee
Im sorry to tell you this but that is way too small!!!! Are they young or adult fish?
how about you read the thread...

The managuenses pretty much rule the tank...actually there really is no question about that. They pretty much have at least a third of the tank to themselves. And I am planning on moving the managuenses out to a breeding tank now that they've paired up and started breeding. The pirahnas (yea red belly) will have to stay. I don't have enough room for another tank (aside from the breeder), and a bigger tank is...expensive (when you live off a limited paycheck). But yes I do feed them everday...sometimes twice. A quick "snack" of pellets and bloodworms, and a full meal at night of around 3-5 goldfish. Makes it a ***** to clean at the end of the week, but it keeps them happy and peaceful.
