Hi. Here's my background. I sort of inherited a 10 gallon tank and some fish in May 05. This is my first tank and i knew nothing about keeping fish except for what the donor of the tank told me. So i've been researching on the web since then on this site and others, and have a good handle on what's going on.

I noticed that the previous owner didn't do the proper research, so i knew i could make some improvements to the maintenance of the tank. When i got the tank there was 1 opaline gourami, 1 red fire dwarf gourami, 2 giant danios, 2 guppies, 2 black neon tetras, 1 scissortail, 1 silver dollar, and 1 peppered cory cat. So the first thing that jumped out at me was that the tank was overstocked. I lost the red fire gourami due to agression by the opaline... i'm assuming because of nature, and the crowded conditions. I also lost a guppy due to some unknown ailment. The rest are doing fine. These fish are tough... the tank was originally set up in New Brunswick, Canada. They were packed up and driven to Halifax. A few days later they were packed up again and boarded a plane to Toronto. They spent a few weeks in Toronto in a makeshift rubbermaid container. They were then packed up again and driven 3 hours away to get to me where they spent about a month in the rubbermaid again. Finally i got the tank and they were transferred. That's quite a trip for tropical fish.

Since then, i've built a really strong stand, and am going to get a 55 gal tank the next time i feel like driving to Ottawa. By the way, i live about an hour from Ottawa, and about 3 hours from Toronto. I'm looking forward to giving them a bigger home, and am enjoying having them around in general. I've always wanted fish, just never did it until recently.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

From the list of fish you have inherited the scissor tail, silver dollar, giant danios and black neons should be in groups of 6+. The guppies should be every one male to 2 females and the corys also like to be in groups of 3+ the more the merrier.

Just be aware of the potential size of the scissor tail and silver dollars. The silver dollars are also avid plant munches if you are planning on a planted tank.

Something to think about when you get your bigger tank.

Thanks Emma. Ya i have done some research on the various fish that i have now. It seems most fish like to be in schools so that's what i was planning on doing once i get the bigger tank. From what i've read the silver dollars can get to be around 7" and the scissortails around 6" or so. As for the danios, i am sorta guessing that they are giant danios. They are currently about 2.5 inches long and i just don't think they are zebras.
To be honest, i was planning on getting some more black neons, corys, a few more male guppies (the one i have now is male), and maybe a couple scissortails. I wasn't going to get any more danios, or silver dollars because they get so big. The one i have now is maybe 2.5 inches long not including the tail. I have a hard time believing that the scissortails get so big. Mine is only maybe a couple inches long.
I wanted to leave some 'gallonage' for a small school of neon or cardinal tetras and i don't want to overstock. I just wanted to add some more colour and i sorta like the smaller fish a little better. Part of the reason that i want to get the 55 is because i feel like they are cramped a little in the 10 so i was looking forward to giving them some more room.
Thanks for the comments, i always enjoy reading other points of view.
