Hi,

I just signed up because I love my tropical fish and this looks like a nice friendly place for tips and advice.

I have a small tank at the moment at only 30L, but its more than enough for my 13 fish.

I have 3 Blue Neon, 3 Glowlight, 6 Black Neon Tetras (thought I was buying 3 different!) and 1 golden Chinese suckerfish!

They all live happily in nice clear water. They come to me and the kids when we are close to the tank!

Planning to buy a much bigger tank and get more fish but am a little unsure of whats involved. Great palce to start, here, I thought.

Well, about me,,,, im 39 n from Cumbria, England. Got a 5 year old and a 2 year old, both girls. They love the fish! They also love our rabbit, Casper, a pink eyed whte!!

Well, dunno what else to say apart from HELLO!!! If theres owt I've missed or anything you wanna know......just ask!

Think i'm gonna like it here!!

Cheers

to TFF! Hope you enjoy it here.

I hope what I'm about to say doesn't make you feel like we're less friendly. I'm not trying to be rude or mean or anything, it's just important and best that you know now rather than later.

But..your tank is not more than enough for your fish.

All of them excluding the suckerfish are schooling, so need to be kept in groups of 6+, and none of them are suitable for that tank size.
The neons & glowlights should be kept in a 70l+ tank.

The chinese suckerfish should be kept in a 300l+ tank and are not good community fish as when they grow older they stop eating algae and start going after other fishes slime coat.

Buying a bigger tank is the same as buying a small one, it just takes up more room & opens up your stocking options! :) What size tank were you thinking of getting?

Would love to see some pics of your current tank & Casper too!

Oh dear! Someone gave me bad info then. I was told about 1L per fish!!! They all do swim about together. The suckerfish is constantly cleaning. We feed him (sharkey!) algae wafers regular but do keep an eye on him.

Is a new tank a matter of urgency? Can get my hands on a 68L tank pretty sharpish. Its just the cycling that would take time. Although its a 2nd hand tank so should the filter not already be cycled?? These are things im not sure on ya see?

I'm worried now!

Don't want to hurt or upset my boys! They do seem happy though!

Cheers for the advice by the way! Mucho appreciated!

Oh dear! A commonly used thing is 1g (4l) for every 1"(2.5cm) of fish. It's still not the best rule cause you wouldn't want stick a 10" fish in a 10g. Best used for streamlined fish under 6".

I'd be getting a bigger tank ASAP, yes. I'm not sure if that is big enough for all your fish and in their respective schools (6+ each) though. And it won't be big enough in the long run for the CAE.

If you're buying a secondhand tank, check to see how long the tank has been without fish and if they still have the filter media. If it's not been too long and the media has been kept damp it should still have bacteria on it.

You can also take the filter media out of the filter on your tank and put it into the filter of the new one, if you're going to switch over all of the fish. :)

Just to add to this....bought a 98L tank today! Looks great! Can't wait to swap they boys over!

Its a Aquael tank with Aquael filter, heater and light!

Gonna browse around for tips on getting it set up. Cant wait to buy a moonlight lamp!

Getting excited!

Welcome, someone correct me if im wrong but cant you just move all your filter media from the 30l to the 98l and not add anymore fish for like a week... Thats what i thought you could do. But yea chinese algae eaters IMO are very bad fish to have, 1. they only eat algae as babies 2. they eat the slime coat of your other fish when its older 3. they get pretty big. So you might want to rehome him and up your schooling fish up to 6 each. I dont really have anything else to add so welcome again! :)

Yep you're right saw, though I'd wait a bit longer than a week, not only for everything to settle but for the fish to get used to their new home.

Cammy, if you want, you can move over the filter media from your current filter into the new one, and the substrate, and the fish all at once.

So...when I do get new fish, 3 Neons and 3 glowlights, how many can the 98L hold roughly?

Thanks for the advice by the way! Chuffed to bits!

I wouldnt add anymore with that CAE, but idk could get 4 of each of those groups
