Hi Getting A 65l Tank On Sunday.....

Hi eveyone, this is my first post, i currently have a biorb with white cloud mountin minnows in it, i have just purchsed a 65l aqua one 500 from ebay and plan to do a new tank in time, i have only ever had cold water fish and dispise pets at home as they sold me two infected fantails which eventually died, i went to my LFS after a lot of research on the net and decided the WCMM would be best for the biorb, i have 3 at the moment and plan another 3 in a week or so, sorry i am waffling on.....lol so the plan is to do something with the 65L i am totally open to suggestions there is a heater with the aqua one but i am affraid to use it and could use a mentor if anyone can be bothered, please gimmie a shout if you have any ideas folks!

buy a group of Pseudomugil signifer rainbowfish and keep them in the 65litre. They grow to about an inch long and breed readily. They don't even normally bother their eggs or young. You can have plants in there and they would be happy.
Alternatively Melanotaenia praecox is another rainbowfish. They grow a bit bigger and do eat young but and quite nicely coloured.
The above are both tropical fishes so you would need to keep the water warm. I am not sure why you are affraid to use the heater in the tank. They are usually quite safe unless the glass is cracked or there is moisture inside the heater. Having a circuit breaker (trip switch) on the power point for the fish tank will prevent you from getting electrocuted should something go wrong. They can also be fitted into the main fuse box in the house which is a better place to have them.

Gold Medakas are a nice coldwater fish and so are bitterlings. Bitterlings lay their eggs inside mussels and the babies swim out a month or so later.

Go to the petshop and make a list of the fish you like. Then you have somewhere to start.

Heaters are simple, and safe when used corretly. Best advise is to un-plug all equipment before placing your hands into the tank. (not that I ever bother :look:

) Setting the temp is easy also. Spimply plug in, leave it overnight to get up to temporature. Then you check the temp with a thermomitor, and adjust accordingly, using a dial on the top of the heater. most have readings on the front to indicate the tepmoratuer they are set at, but they are not aloways accurate. They make an excelent guide for adjusting though. 2 degree too cold, meany up it 2 degrees on the readout and it should more to the ideal (24-26 centigrade)

I would advise you to do a [topic="113861"]fishless cycle[/topic] before adding any fish, regardless of if they are cold of tropical water fish. This is less hard on the fish themselves. I'd look arround the LFS, and see if any fish catch your eye. If some do, take their names. Don't let any sales assistant sell you anything though, as this is how people end up wit fish that grow to 36 inches in tanks that are 24 inches in length. Unfortunately bad advise form LFS's is the norm, not the minority.
