Hi im Nick I'm 50 From Australia and just got my first betta 5 weeks ago, and with your help hope to keep him alive.

This is Microsoft,

An interesting choice of name. WHat prompted it?

Pretty impressive the beta doesn't attack those other fish or vice versa.
How many gallons is that tank?

I am a bit of a PC geek, I spend most of my time on a PC help site.

The betta is Microsoft, the guppies are 2 Males are Mac and Linux. and the 4 girls are Petra, Olivia, Rebbeca and Quina, Yes yes laught it up LOL.

When I first rescued Microsoft from his cup he was not in the best of health, He was laying on his side mostly, The only reason I got him is because when I approched the cup he almost introduced himself, None of the other fish showed any interest in me Microsoft made a fuss in his cup. I got him home put him in the tank he went straight to the bottom and stayed there for 2 days, On the 3rd day he started eating and showing signs of life. That was 5 weeks ago. All I add to the tank is a bit of salt. 6 gallons of water = 1 teaspoon of salt. Oh yes and some stresszyme plus.

The tank is a 5 gallon Aquael, The filter is a one of these.

Aqua Aquarium Filter External Canister Fish Tank Water Sponge Pond 800LPH

3 stage sponge Coarse medium and fine, with almost 2 KG of media in it, with the flow rate turned right down, As you can see he is happy.

The fish do not fight, However I have a problem with snails Microsoft has killed 4 so far and all the fish in the tank think I only put snails in there to feed the fish.

My water is normal I test every 2 to 3 days, And with the setup I have, I have not needed to change water in 2 weeks, Is this bad?

All advice is welcome
Nick

Hey Nick!

Hate to say it but your tank is very overstocked, personally one betta would be enough for it.

The guppies went to a new home, Kid next door has them now.

Hi Nick and Microsoft.  :)   Tank looks nice and although the fish were not fighting, it was a bit much for such a small tank.  Good for rehoming the guppies.  I bet the neighbor kid really likes them.  As for the snails, there are some fish that just kill snails for no real apparent reason other than they like to eat them.

As for your tank's water parameters, even though they are staying really good, it is still a good idea to do a weekly waterchange.  This replaces minerals and trace elements that the tests do not register which are good for the system as a whole.  A regular 25% a week is a good easy amount to change regularly.
