Hi Everyone,

I've been reading this forum for some time as a guest and have finaly decided to join the ranks of fish keepers :D I have noticed that there is some much useful info here that if i ever have a problem, I know where to go for the answers.

First thing i want to check out is this : I lost a clown loach today (definately dead, had a large chunk missing) so I have done a water test. My results were as follows :

Ph : 7.2
Amonia : 0
Nitrite : 0.5

Is this normal or is the nitrite too high. First time I have ever tested a tank in over 5 year for fish keepeing so I'm not sure.

Cheers all and I look forward to being a good member of this forum :D

Welcome garfield another cat is always welcome

It would be dead with a piece missing, poor fish.

Have fun and someone with more experience will answer your question. :p

Howdy, the Nitrite is what you want to be concentrating on, it should be at 0. your tank could be "cycling" and that could be the cause of your loss, but if he had a chunk out of him maybe he was attacked :S

You see this is what I thought, but the tank has been running for over a year. To be honest the Clown Loach didn't look too healthy when I put him in the tank a week ago but the other one that went in with him is perfectly happy.

Would you say then that the Nitrite level of 0.5 is acceptable??

all i can tell you is 0 is better then anything, i have never cycled a tank myself and don't really follow te steps in doing it so well, i use dto products when i set-up a new tank "aqua PLUS" and "cycle" and i have readings of 0 a couple days later, but if he didnt look so great when you added him that could be the reason

Any nitrite at all is a big problem it means that the tank isn't cycled.
Tell me some info on how you look after your fish so i can help you.
Water changes, Do you add water conditioner? Water temp? And the amount of fish you have.

Always remember that its water keeping not fish keeping!
If your water is good normally the fish will be healthy too.

And welcome to the site :hi:

O.K, I agree we need to watch our water, but I like watching our fish too!
