Have been reading the forum for a couple of weeks and finally decided to post.

There is an awful lot of good information. By reading here I have discovered how good live plants are for my bettas so I just ordered some Anubius and Java Fern off of Ebay. Shipping wasn't TOO bad and since it is a 60 mile round trip to the nearest pet store, I went ahead and bit the bullet.

My three bettas are:

Ricky - housed in a 10 gal.
Fred - housed in a 3 gal. Eclipse
Blizzard - 5.4 gal. tank

All tanks are filtered and heated.

I will try to attach pics - I am using the breeders pictures since my camera doesn't take the best pictures of fish.

I have to post one pic at a time because of file restrictions. This first one is Ricky.

P.S. I also have cichlids in 50 gal. and 75 gal. tanks, but that's a different topic!

Fred

And Blizzard

Thank you. They are all youngsters - Fred is approx. 4 mos. old while Ricky and Blizzard are 5 months - so I am thinking they will just get better with age.

One question - the plants I am getting have plant weights on them. Will it hurt anything to keep the weights on?

Thanks again!

welcome and what beautiful bettas , those little eclipse tanks are ideal for bettas i got a 17litre and 21 litre in the shed , just got to convince hubby we need a betta lol :)

:hi: LionMom!

Those are just gorgeous fish!
And their finnage certainly will continue to grow - I hope we get pics to update as they do.
Some of the plant weights may contain lead, which could leach out into the water although symptoms and resultant damage of relatively low-level lead absorption don't tend to be obvious.
You may also find that plants tend to rot under the area the weight covers, at least I have found this, so I'd suggest removing them.
Java fern is usually attached to rocks or driftwood, and can be temporarily (and hopefully unobtrusively) held in place until the roots grow in/around with thread, fishing line, anything that won't damage the rhyzome/inquisitive fish, leach toxins, or rot too quickly.
Anubias are lovely plants, and no nonsense about dormant periods, as with aponogetons - I'll look forward to seeing pics (even if your camera isn't great) of your fish and tanks once they're planted.
60 mile round trip to LFS?
That sucks - but you probably live in the country, which would make the travelling distance worth-while?

Edit - extra letter was smuggled onto page in a word, but is now safely in custody.
There could be a million of them out there, right under my nose...

Hello again! Sorry I have not responded to all of your kind posts and words, but I have had the cold from Hades & it was really kickin' my butt!!!

Anyways, thanks to all for the kind words and thank you for the plant information & especially about the plant weights!! YIKES - I had no idea they could leach stuff into the water!

I have found that my bettas are MUCH happier without any filter going. So for now I have put some plants in each of their tanks (my order arrived today) and unplugged the filters. Of course, they still have their heaters!

I was doing water changes once a week with the filters running. How often should I do them now with a 10 gal., a 5 gal. and a 3 gal.?

Thanks again!!!!

on completly cycled tanks, see cycling at top on the home page,,,also depends on how many fish you have in taNK, 1 in a ten will need less then 8 in a ten...
i do 25 % weekly for 10 gal, 25 % 2 weekly for 5 gal ,, and 25% 3 times weekly for 3 gal...

Apparently not all plant weights are made of soft lead anymore, but I wouldn't want to chance it.
Espcially considering that now it's been admitted that the hard lead fishing weights which drop off fishing lines are causing problems in lake fish and being banned in various places...

Edit: the Typo Queen reigns supreme...

Lovely bettas :D

I can recommend Sarah's (Pippoodle) amazon frogbit to put in with your fish as I was the one who bought it for my son's betta Finbar.
Finbar didn't even wait for my to finnish putting all the plants in before he'd curled up in the roots and he was having a snooze ;)

Now to get rid of those peskie guppie babies so I can have their tank for my betta
