Hi all.

I'm Anthony from Newcastle, UK.
I have joined up here because as of tonight me and my partener have become the owner of some lovely tropical fish but to be honest, we have set up the tank (hopefully correct) and it came with fish and it is all second hand... We got it for a bargain price but basically we are struggling to identify what the fish are.

We know we have:
2 x Albino Sucking Loaches
3 x Convicts

Plus a few more fish, we got 12 in total, if I put a picture up of the fishies could you all have a go at helping us out? I can't right now as they seem to be in hiding lol.

I will also be asking for loads of advice within the next few days so be prepared for stupid questions, its my first time :p.

Thanks in advance
Anthony.

welcome!

firstly have a good read of the beginner articles, especially about cycling the tank. You're in what we call a fish in cycle. did the filter come with wet filter media (and bacteria preserved). IF not you will need to keep a check on the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels and perform large water changes. e.g. 50% whne you see ammonia or nitrite rise (which will be soon if not cycled!) water changes may have to be daily, althought the fish will look ok, ammonia and nitrite can cause long term gill and nervous system damage and of course...death, so best to keep the water clean daily.

hope this helps!

maybe post a picture and we can identify the fish for you?

Thanks for the welcome...

If i'm honest with you, you have just said all of that in a totally different language to me lol. I have no idea what you are going on about.

I will post some pictures up in about 15 minutes, the tank is an Hagen Tropiquarium 88 tank and it has two filters, do not have a clue what kind of filters they are... I'll get a picture of the tank too so you can see and try to get pictures of filters. We are totally baffled by all of this... I'm all embarissed now.

My Mam and the missus Mam know quite a bit but it's a bit late to ask them now and the missus Mam coming around to have a look tomorrow.

Thanks again for the welcome :).

Here is the tank set up as we think it should be done:

Here is one of the filters it is an Aquaflow 3, it is now verticle though, hope that is right lol:

Here is a fish we dont know what it is:

And another, we have two of these:

This one here looks abit like a Convict to us but it is huge compared to the others:

We think this is a Convict:

I'm sure the water will clear :)

The most important thing right now is your filters; these contain friendly bacteria that break down the ammonia produced by the fish, first into nitrite and then into nitrate which you remove through water changes. Did you keep the filters damp? And I hope you haven't washed them or anything!

If they were kept damp and haven't been washed, and as long as you dechlorinated the water before you put it in then the good bacteria should have survived and you won't have to worry about 'cycling' (that's getting the bacteria to grow which needs to be done with new tanks).

Hope this helps make things a bit clearer!

Hi.
That makes things alot clearer for us.

Erm, well the tank was transported from only 20 minutes away so I am assuming the filters were still damp, we never cleaned them or anything like that though.
We put in some tap water conditioner thing (aquasafe) which we put in whilst filling the tank back up, it was 5ml to every 2 gallons.

At the moment me and the missus are just praying we have done everything right and that when we wake up none of the poor fishies are dead lol.
Can anyone name the fishes above in the pictures then?

Thanks again for simplifying things.

its a good size tank :) you can never tell by pictures though hehe... have u thought about plants? will make your fish feel more at home, ive not regretted my desicion since i put live plants un my tank (and i had no knowledge at all on them lol)

We are hoping to go out tomorrow and get some before I have to go to work but we don't really want to over crowd it just yet, I don't think we will get live ones though, i'm not a gardener lmao.

lol im no gardener aswell i have next to no experience in plants.. i just stuck them in and watched them grow :p my fish poop does the job hahaha

LMAO, nice one, we'll just see what the pet store says while we are there...
Thanks for all the advice given and what not... We are still struggling a little bit but I'm sure as time goes on we'll get there. It all comes eventually I suppose.

hi antony
the yellow fish you have 2 of is labidochromis caeruleus aka yellow lab , which is an african cichlid from lake malawi .
the 1 in the 5th picture is another african cichlid for sure , which species tho im not sure .
the fish in the 2nd from last picture doies indeed look like a convict but id rather see a clearer pic before i commit for sure thats what it is .

the yellow labs will fare better kept in a small group ideally 1 male with 3 females . rocks are the chosen decor for these fish , they belong to a group of african cichlids called mbuna .

i cant advise as to what to do with regards to the other fish as im not sure exactly what they are
