I've had fish before but always the 'wrong' way. Whatever the people told me to do at petsmart I did. And ... with little success. In my defense I was a kid.

So, now I've got a 10g tank. I've been fishless cycling for the last couple weeks and now the ammonia and nitrites are down to zero within 8 hours no matter how much ammonia I accidentally put it  So tomorrow I'm doing the big water change (don't have conditioner atm) and then i plan on adding a couple fish.

The thing is. I don't know where to start. I really want ot have a school of small bright fish. Ideally Mosquito Rasboras but if those don't work or I cant find them then i'd like neon tetras.

Questions?

Do I need a bottom feeder?
Do I need to add just one or two fish at first?
How many mosquito rasboras or tetras can i have in the 10g? I know the one inch rule but also know it is flexible. Could I have 8-10 rasboras?

Thanks for any feedback.

Edit: Oh i have jungle val and java moss in there right now although it's not looking all that great. I think I'm seeing new growth though. yay... And substrate is gravel mixed with laterite.

as for your questions,
-you dont need a bottom feeder, i dont have any in my 10 gal, unless you count my Ottos, which are usually not on the bottom lol
-you dont need to add fish at intervals if you followed the fishless cycle guide from this site, it is designed to simulate a fully stocked tank, so you can fully stock your tank at one time...
-im not really sure...lol, but maybe someone else can help you

Hope i was able to help! Good Luck!

Hey thanks. That was helpful. I like the endler's livebearers as well. So pretty. I want a kind of bright 'flashy' fish because my 20-month old daughter is fish crazy he he.

If you have livebearers what do you do with all the fish? It sounds like they reproduce pretty quickly.

Well you can either get all females or all males (they're easy to tell apart - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=128756 endlers for example) - that way you don't have to worry about babies!

Or you could just get maybe 2 males and the rest females.. there will be births - but you don't always have to use the fry traps etc - just let nature takes it course and then you'll get maybe 1 or 2 fry survive

Hope this helps :good:
