hi everyone. at the moment my fish (2 bala, 4 clown loach, 4 festive cichlids, 1 golden guarmi, 1 plec) are happy in my 200l tank. i am picking up another tank in a few weeks. 6 foot by 2 by 2. i would like some large fish in this. would love paroon/id catfish but i think they get too large. should i just transfer my fish from the 200l into the large tank (maybe with some more fish) and do something with the 200l. or leave them in the 200 and go for ome monster fish in the 6 footer? any help will be very much appreciated :)

HI there,

congrats on getting a six footer.

Looking at the stock you have in the 200L I would go with the transferring them to the bigger tank option and then upping the amount of bala sharks you have as they prefer to be in a shoal. Even the clowns might be better with a couple more added. Another option could be to split your existing stock between the 2 tanks and then work from there, making sure the clowns and the balas go in to the bigger tank. I don't know how big or how territorial festive ciclids get/are but I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than me will be along, but if the plec is a common or a sailfin he is going to get way too big for the 200L as well.

Hope that's of help to you :)

Move your clown loaches to the larger tank and you will have four large fish soon enough.

If I had a tank that big I'd be tempted to have large shoals of small fish, far more entertaining in the long run than watching a very few large fish amble around. But that's just me.

my clowns and bala are around a year old. i started with 4 bala 1 was a runt and the otheres bullied it to death. and i think the other one over ate. he/she developed immediate swim bladder after a flake session. i sat with him/her for a few hours gently craddling them and holding them in the correct position and moving them around the tank to allow water flow over the gills. he/she brightened right up but died a few days later :( sorry for that little story. lol. i have had a few groups of fish in my smaller 60l tank. had around 50 guppies at one stage due to breeding etc. and i would now like some larger more 'WOW' factor fish :)

plec is about 2 years now and has slowed down in growth rate (he is definataly the 'boss')

180 gallons! I'm so jealous...........
Good luck with it. I'd move sharks, loaches & pleco to the new larger tank. The rest will appreciate the new space in the smaller tank after those larger fish are gone.

i think you are right :) what about the addition of a lima shovlenose?

Good looking fish but they're aggressive and they get to be 18 inches long!

I would add compatible smaller fish to the big tank, maybe a school of something that works well with what you already have for the tank. I kinda agree with the poster that said it looks more impressive to have a big group of fish than a single centerpiece fish. If you want a WOW factor I'd get a Giant Gourami and be done with it. That's not everyone's favorite choice but I wouldn't mind one.

as long as my sharks and clown grow too shouldnt be a problem should it? and obviously have to be fed enough as to not hunt for more. my clowns and bala eat bloody anything lol
