Hermit Crabs

My smaller one finally molted. I come home from school to find him naked, hunched in the corner. This is how I found my last one, dead... so I took him out, with my empty shells, and put him in my bedroom floor. After some coaxing, I managed to talk him into one of the shells. Satisfied, I put him back into his cage. The next day I come in, and hes back in his old shell. I only have two empty shells... the one he refused, and the one he came back out of. He needs to change, right? What should I do?

is he a land hermit?

I keep reef tanks and i have over 50 mini hermits that molt swap/ change shells all thew time. as hermits grow, the shell dosent grow with them unlike a snail so there for you must provide some new shells. try and get a variety of shapes and sizes. i.e. going gradually up in size and a couple just a bit smaller.
