Helping A Friend...

A friend of mine wanted a small tank like i did when i started off. So he is buying my little 5 gallon and I'm going to get a cheap one. I have a ten gallon and I've only got 5 black widow tetras. He wants them in his and something else small. I don't know as i am awful at this kind of thing. What can he have?

I don`t think he should add anymore fish in there. Is the Tank cycled ??

The five black widow tetras will max out the capacity of a five gallon. It will take a strict maintenance schedule of water changes and filter cleanings to keep these five fish healthy.

black widows should not even be in a 5g reallly.....too small.

He wants more than one apparently.. I told him that he should see if he can cope with one but he wants more..

Tetras need a lot more swimming room than a 5 gallon can provide. A Betta would be nice, or turning it into a shrimp tank, both are very entertaining to watch. How about some endlers? Or 5-6 male guppies? They are small and colourful, and you don't have to worry about fry! Adding in some plants and small stones would make it more interesting too.

5 gallon really isn't that big, aside from a betta there isn't a lot of other options. However, providing that the tank is cared for well and water chemistry maintained, they could try some microrasbora (there are several different species out there) male endlers (if both genders kept, they will be overloaded with fry rather quickly and males are the most colourful) or ember tetras. IMO, a group of 6 would be enough in there.

Try some low light live plants too, such as java fern, java moss, anubias and crypts

IMO guppies should have a bigger tank but if he keeps his water conditions good he could get about 3 males.
