A heavily pregnant guppy has a bright red lump sticking out of its anus area. She's not moving much.

I've isolated her temporarily in a bucket to prevent other fish hassling her.
I REALLY want to save this fish and her babies as I don't have many guppies and they never seem to have babies (or maybe all get eaten if they give birth at night)
1. What is the matter with her
2. What treatment can I do
3. Should I put her back in her tank but in a largish breeder thing to isolate her

Guppy could have intestional/internal parasites. Use an anti-internal parasite med (what is available depends on where you live in the world). I would advise treating the tank as a whole as internal parasites can be very infectious and if she has them its likely the other fish may have them too.

No it doesn't look like worms, more like a prolapse (do fish get these?). I'm sure it hassomething to do with fish obstetrics. never actually seen a guppy give birth.so don't know if htis is normal before fry appear but she doesn't look at all well -sits on bottom or swims with her head down now. Other fish in tank are OK

Its not normal at for guppys, whether ones about to give birth or not. An almost exact thing occured to one of my female swordtails a while back and i used an anti internal parasitic med to treat the fish and the swordtail quickly got better :) .

1 What do parasites look like? This is a roundish lump
2.What meds did you use?
3.Did you treat the whole tank or just the sick fish?
Thanks

1. There are quite a few parasites that can affect fish internally. Some are visible around the fishes anus (like camalanus worms) while some live completely in the gut. Intestional parasites can damage the tract lining causing prolaspe or an inflamed anus. See these cases;

2. I personally used Sterazin to treat the fish with: http://www.waterlife.co.uk/waterlife/sterazin.htm
3. Treated the tank as a whole :) .
