Hello again everyone i posted a few days ago with ammonia problems you can find my topic titled ammonia and ammonia level.

Ok need help asap, i've got my ammonia levels down to 0.1, my nitrate levels are at 0 but now my Nitrite has gone to 4.0!! Which is highly toxic to fish. By doing the water changes to get my ammonia levels down my ph has now gone to 8.5 it was at 7.5, i've ran out of proper PH 7.0.
Will the ph level effect the nitrite level?

I was also treatin fish for whitespot as stated in my previous topic, finished my last dose today.

Is there any reason why my nitrite levels have gone to 4.0? Should i do 50% water change 80% please help! I don't want my fishies to die!

Also my blue ram still has one whitespot dot left on his fin, should i carry on treating? or does the medication stay in the water for few days? I used waterlife Protozin.

Any help will be much appreciated
cheers
Dave

I forgot to add i also used JBL filter start yesterday, could this have caused any problems?

I always use filter start when adding new sponges etc. The people at maidenhead aquatics told me it wouldnt hurt to add another to help with the good bacteria to bring the ammonia levels down.

The people at maidenhead aquatics will try to sell anything to you, all there bothered about is the cash

Should i do small water changes each day to bring the nitrite down?

You need to do an immediate 90% or larger water change and don't forget to replace the ich medication. The water change and the pH are not causing your nitrite problem.

+1 huge water changes are needed to get ammonia AND nitrite down to 0. You're in the midst of a cycle.

Thanks again everyone much appreciated, great forum!

Just done a 80% water change, will see what it's like tomorrow and do another 50% if needed. Wouldn't be a problem if the ram didn't have whitespot! Wasting alot of medication zzz

Strange thing is though, while i've been going through the cycle with high ammonia levels etc none of the fish have been stressed, colours of the rainbows have been fine. I would have expected the fish to be acting strange, there has been a little darting around with the guppys as to be expected with high ammonia levels, apart from that everything's fine.
Touch wood everything stays this way and i don't loose any fish until the cycle finishes.

Thanks again
Dave

Problem is, fish exposed to high amounts of ammonia for an extended time will have shortened lives, at the very least. They likely will have problems down the road that won't show up immediately.

Please keep us posted.

Do your large water change and retest for nitrites. If the nitrites are still about .25ppm you need to do another water change. The pH being higher is not a huge problem at the moment and try not to add chemicals to alter the pH as huge pH fluctuations and do more damage than good.
