I have just done a big water change on the tank, filled up as usual with the hose, added declor for the whole tank. My severums have gone down hill as soon as the water went in. They are lying on their side losing colour before my eyes. I do not understand what I have done wrong. Water changed as usual, no changes, any advice welcome.

maybe they didnt like the temp change or something hope they come round
scot :)

Is the temp too low/high?

Has any work been done to the pipes/system (by water board) recently? Sometimes the water companies add extra chlorine after a large clean up.

Any other fish affected?

You know I was just thinking that, so I have filled a bucket with warm water, dechlorinated it and put them in. Fingers crossed, i'm so mad with myself even though I have done everything as I usually do.

Thanks for the reply

Oh hell Minxfishy I didn't think about the waterboard, they are doing work on the country road near me....

The temperature is pretty low on the tank, guess thats down to the fact the weather is getting colder??? How do you rectify this when doing large water changes on a large tank, when filling direct for the hose?

Rainbows, Ellioti and plecs seem absouletly fine just the severums

I use a mixer tap, so I have the water at the right temp (within a degree or so) before re-filling, the only time I use completley cold is in the summer.

If you have works going on, there is a good chance of extra chemicals being put in the water, double dose with dechlor, I always do anyway.

Thanks for the advice, gonna have to speak to hubby about getting a mixer tap put in I think, one of the severums has perked up a bit the other smaller one is very very dark in colour and sitting on the bottom hope he/she is gonna be ok. I have wacked the heaters up to try and get the temp up quick.

I always dechlor for the amount of the full tank, then put another 10ml in just in case. Will start doubling from now.

Thanks for the quick replys both of you much appreciated.

raising the temp to quick isnt good for the fish either :(

Oh seems I can't do right for doing wrong... its rising very slowly

Sorry to hear of your loss. I had the exact same problem just over a year ago and it nearly wiped out the entire contents of my 60litre tank.

If I recall correctly our water had been cut off a few days previous so was thinking the council had maybe changed something with the water or flushed out the pipes as somebody else just pointed out.

I don't think any amount of any dechlorinator would have helped either of us out.

Keep us posted on how things go.

Thanks to everyone who replied to this, I can report both Sevs seem fine, the bigger one seems 100% ok, the smaller is still a little dark in colour but swimming around fine now.

Mystery I do not know whether it was the chlorine or the temperature - probably both, I will not be making this mistake again

Glad to hear they are both ok, with Sev's, particularly young ones, I found they can be easily stressed, so the drop in temp probably upset them, mine hated water changes, would hide and go dark, even my large red spot still hates w/c's and hides out, takes a good couple of hours after until he comes out of hiding  By tomorrow morning, Im sure they will both be swimming around as if nothing had happened.

Thanks Minx, I have become strangely attached to those two sevs and nearly had heart attack when I saw the state of them.
