hi all i am new to the forum last kept tropical fish about 20 yrs ago so you could say a beginner again, the prob i have is set the tank up yesterday i have used sand insted of gravel this time around set it up and turned the tank on at 2.00pm yesterday the water was a bit cloudy which i expected but i thought it would be clear by this morning(i am sure it used to clear that quick ) still cloudy this morning and the same tonight does not seem to be clearing

Did you rinse the sand first? If you didn't it could take a few days for the filter to clear it but the cloudyness will go.

If you did not wash the sand, then it can take up to 3, maybe more days for the sand to settle.

no i didnt wash the sand shop owner just told me to move the sand around to make sure there was no air pockets

Yup, it will take a couple days for it to settle. Maybe not that long though. Nothing to worry about, really.

wait for a while,as far as the other members said yes you have to wait for a few days to settle down the sand i your tank.then the cloudiness will vanish...
which type of fish you wish to keep in your tank?

hi discus lover it will be a community tank, its a little bit clearer this morning also changed about a quater of the water last night and was careful not to disturb the sand :good:

For next time.. what most of our members to is put the sand in a big bucket outdoors and run the hose at a slow enough speed that the sand gets churned up but not washed out and then just leave it running for some chunk of time, 1/2 hour, hour? They check periodically to see when the outwash is more clear.

Welcome to TFF mounts, a lot has changed in recent decades, have you begun to read our Beginners Resource Center? I'd suggest a review of the nitrogen cycle, fishless cycle and startup articles with questions here in your thread. Have you picked up a test kit yet? Have you started the search for ammonia?
