My 7 year old daughter has a, I think, 60L tank, tonight we came home to 5 dead fish, 1 Sissortail, 2 Harlequins, 1 Endler Guppy & 1 female guppy, who we thought was pregnant, we also lost another "pregnant" guppy earlier in the week, we just put in live plants, as we got told to put in the plants for the females, for the fry. I dont have a water testing kit or anything here, other than the stress coat stuff.

Anybody have any ideas on whats created the massacre? I'm thinking its the plants. The Harlequins, Sissortails & Endlers, we've had since the tank first started about 7/8 months ago.

Any suggestions or ideas would be very gratefully received, my daughter is pretty upset. But at the same time, she has told me that she read in a leaflet, that if any fish has a jaggy under belly then thats a sign of disease, and the 2 females had that.

Thanks for reading
Claire

did it have a filter an heater? its most probably disease due to foul water quality. how often were water changes performed and in what volume?

The Jagged belly was caused by dropsy, which, in turn, is caused by organ failure. What were the fish being fed? Also, the plants probably didn't cause any trouble, not unless you didn't provide them sufficient light, which would cause them to rot.
Also, what do you have in terms of filtration and heating? Also, if the dead fish were in long enough, they rot, give off ammonia, and kill everything else.

Good job with educating yourself though, and give your daughter a pat on the back, alot of people run into aquariums without reading!

There is a filter & heater, all's working fine, last time water was changed was just over 2 weeks ago

The fish are being fed Aquarian tropical flake food. We left the house this morning about 11:30am, came home about 6pm, and theres bodies floating around. The lights go on in the morning and switched off at night, so roughly about 10 hours of lights being on.

My daughter suprises me constantly with things she learns, who knows where she read the jaggy under belly!! It's her tank she wanted for her birthday, she's got a couple books, where they are right now, I dont know, in her pigsty of a bedroom LOL

Do you have a thermometer?

Thermo's at 32c

what is the water temp? are the filter and heater working?

32 IS WAY TOO HOTTT!!!! im thinking your heater has malfunctioned, turn it off and let the water cool down on its own, and buy a new one. or if youve set it to 32 bring it down to 24 and let the water cool down on its own

24oC then plug back in, make sure its stays off although plugged in (to make sure its working)

Ok done that. See how it goes now, theres been another casualty, another Harlequin, it looked fine earlier, not so good now though!

If the heater's faulty, first thing tomorrow ... Pet shop!

Well been watching the temp very closely over night, its now down at 25c ... The fish that have survived the chaos, are doing good ... keeping a close eye on the tank & fish over the next few days, if alls well, a trip to the fish shop to get some new swimmers is called for!!

Thanks for the help much appreciated.

What happens at high temperatures is the water won't hold as much oxygen in solution. What usually ends up killing the fish is they asphyxiate, so it ends up going pretty fast. Fish that tolerate higher temperatures are able to survive with less oxygen in the water, it is an adaptation that many fish cannot make.
