I have a pair of spawning Green Severums, who have twice laid eggs but have not had any successful fry (only young parents), they have now been moved to the breeding tank and are literally laying eggs as i'm typing!!!

Both fish were very protective of the eggs the 1st two times, but this third time the female is laying the eggs and the male is just following her and eating them straight off the wood!

Is this behaviour normal, since the 1st 2 times they looked after the eggs very well and only picked off a few dead white ones.

Any help would be appreciated as im a bit perplexed

Thanks

Could be due to the moving, he feels unsure and thus is eating the eggs to be safe. Let them settle down and Im sure they will try again.

Could well be, thought it would be safer to have them on thier own and not in a community tank.

Ill go check now and see if its still happening lol I know they can lay hundereds of eggs so fingers crossed, already got Geo babies and now want Severums too!

yes the problem is if the males only eating eggs and not fertilising them then there is nothing you can do unfortunatly, as stated maybe its because of the move,,next time litterally leave them to it, try to resist peering into the tank, put a blanket across the front so they have privacy :good:

Think they get embarassed? Or could be an exhibitionist fish so not sure. Leaving them too it now and will see what happens. At least I have a breeding pair :)

I believe two females will go thru the motions of spawning so not necessarily a pair, are you sure the previous eggs have been fertilised, if so, when did the eggs get eaten or any fry get eaten?

Eggs got eaten toward the end. One fish laid all the eggs and the other followed shaking over them as if fertilising. The fish are a different size and have different protusions so assumed was a male and female. Havent had any fry yet so you may be right, hmmmmmmm confusing, i didnt realise they would go through the motions!

Sounds promising then, hopefully once settled in their new tank, they will get it right :good: Good luck, let us know if you get wrigglers :)

Yeah hoping so, im not 100% sure if they are male and female, but the fish do look different, one is still laying eggs right now, but the behaviour is very different. AS in the female shaking and making numerous passes at the wood to lay

The photo below isnt fantastic but might give an idea

can you see there tubes where the eggs are coming from?
is one fat and seems slightly angled the other long and thin?

Yeah the tubes are definately different!!!

Its always the same fish that lays the eggs and there is very little agression betwen them just lots of fishy flirting lol

young pairs or inexperienced cichlids may eat the eggs or if something is just not right they may eat them but they will get it right and severums make very good parents.
i kept severums for many years and the 3 pairs i had prefered to spawn on slate leant against the back of the tank.
good luck.
