Hi i have a red hump that isnt to well. He is at the bottom of the tank sideways and he cant get himself up. It is a red hump cichlid. Done a little research and think it might be dropsy as it's stomach is inflated

Sorry no-one has replied. I really do not know as never had cichlids.

It might be worth waiting on a reply but epsom salt baths I think are for a different type of fish.

I dont think they eat veg or you could try peas for constiption.

It could also be a paprasite or infection.

i hope someone soon replies that knows more.

Sorry can't help but someone might tell you I am completely wrong and give you advice.

Do you have any water stats ?
Is the fish flicking on objects in the tank ?
Is it still eating ?
has it got a red or swollen anus ?
Is its poop normal ?

Need more info on size of tank in gallons or litres.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia,nitrite,nitrate,and ph.
Is the fish bloated sounds like swim bladder if he can't get himself off the floor.

it might be swim blader. but the bloated stomach, with swim blader problems my fish alway (as a kid i had bad luck with fish and swimbladers) they would have an arched back (head bending sidways to tail) and they would cind of kick about im not 100% but it could be the first sighs.
hope this helps and good luck with the fish

Ph is 7.2, no amonia, no nitrite or nitrate. She is in a tank with 1 male red hump,2 tbar sajicas and a texas cichlid. My tank is 250 litres. This fish has had a large stomach for a while now. My lfs though it could be something to do with the fish not being able to release her eggs. Cheers Angus

What do you use to test your water ? No Nitrate in a well established tank would worry me.

Is it on the floor of the tank / can it control its swimming ?

Hi thanks for all your replies. I use API test kit, when i do my test for nitrate it comes up with bright yellow (0 nitrate). Yes, it is swimming at the bottom of the tank,it doesnt look as if it can control it's swimming.

How old is the kit? They can expire.

Unless you do very frequent water changes or have a heavily planted tank, this kind of worries me.
