Hi there.

Today I bought 3 female platys. Tonight I saw a lone fry swimming from a log to another log.. i quickly grabbed my net, and after a good 30 minutes of terrorizing my tank (and realizing he fits through the net holes- caught him with my hand) I now have him in a glass.

I dont have anything to put him in, and the LFS is closed so I cant buy one of those breeder net things. What can put him in? Im assuming it has to be something in the tank he needs heat.

Please reply if you have any ideas. I really wanna let this guy grow up (im new to this- 1 month is how long ive been at this hobby.)

Also what does he eat? Can i grind up flakes real small?

I'd say to just not worry about it, and set a new tank up when you get the chance. You will probably get more fry in the future :)

He's now floating in a bag.. so the temp stays the same.

edit: saw your reply dwarfs. won't be getting more fry because the platys i bought were all females- to avoid fry. i think this one slipped into the bag.

I have a betta "hex" that I havent had anything in for ages. Will this work for raising him? It doesnt have a heater but I could try.

your best bet is to leave him in the tank.they need the algae in the tank for food.they wont eat flakes till thay are bigger.but get a copule others opinions

what if i put a rock from an established tank that has some algae on it in the hex? the rock would be about 2 inches, surely thats enough algae for a while (leaving him in the tank, he would meet a betta-inflicted doom)

should be but out a bright lamp on the tank for a long time to boost algae growth and then in the morning go get some liquifry or suttin

pardon my newbness, what's liquifry?

and i have a desk lamp I can put right above the betta hex. i'll scrape some algae off the 10g walls and add it to the water also.

Put a ton of floating plants in there, artificial or live. The fry will get by fine and have plenty of places to hide. When I was breeding platys I would stack up rocks to give them a place to escape from the adults, but you have to check the rocks at least once a day. Sometimes an adult or juvie will get hung in there.

Found out about the plants from a club member who breeds livebearers. He packs a 10 gallon full of plants, you can't see half way through the tank. I have a 10 with a few platys the wife picked up from him, it has all my spare plastic & silk plants tossed in. If I can see 3 fry, I know there is a lot more than that.

Even though your platies are all females, you'll still probably be having fry for some time to come. They usually come pre-impregnated ;)

alright, well.. i have him in the betta hex with a tiny bit of sand and two rocks with algae. i have a desk lamp that ill leave on over it 24/7 for some algae too. i crumpled up some flakes til they were like sand, those sunk too. (from what i can tell he wont eat them but i may as well try).

my tank has plenty of places to hide, but the betta is quite a scavenger he goes from log to log, plant to plant, rock to rock for food. eats it off the bottom too. it's for this reason i have a feeling he'll eat the tiny single fry.

do you think the lil one will survive in what i have him in now? there's no heater but the water is gonna stay at about room temp. it may be above, as the desk lamp is making quite a bit of heat. he is about.. 4 millimeters.

ill do some reasearch as to how long they take to grow up

EDIT: im not even sure this is a platy fry, because other fish were in the tank with them.

I just found out from a few other sites that livebearer fry can eat small flakes from the start. Will he collect these off the bottom? Will the temp. fluctuations of no heater and the lamp going on and off kill him? Temp w/ lamp is currently 80F. abkdf!

the count is now at 4.

maybe ill go trade in my other fish and just keep these guys, they seem to.. i wont run outta fish.. *changes mind* i <3 the betta too much.

Hi,

You definately have more to come as females can store sperm for 6 months and have a batch of fry every month, just leave the fry with the adults and most will be eaten if you don't have a tank spare to put them in.

Emma :)
