Help With Stocking Please :d

the guppies and dwarfs...

I have 5 guppies, 3 apistos and 2 keyholes, so far they all seem fine together, they've had to sort out the pecking order between the keyholes and apistos, but no one has been bothered with the guppies, and the guppies don't seem bothered by any of the cichlids either.

some vallis would be good for a taller plant at the back, not sure on low light foreground plants

thanks chris for clarrifying that for me becuase i would really like Cockatoo Dwarf Cichlid i got a bit gutted when i read i cant have them from that site!

i like the look of vallis as well, i actually was going to buy some from my lfs a few eeks back but did not know what they was lol
but thanks for letting me know now i can get some

I've got pics of my cockatoos and a couple of guupies in my pics thread in the fish pic section.

The only thing to watch out for. Is breeding. Any cichlid (including dwarfs) get extremely territorial and aggressive when breeding. But the rest of the time they're fine. And witha tank that size even then I would imagine they wi be ok.

just had a look at your cockatoo cichlid's very nice indeed! made me want them more XD

1 male to 2-3 females correct?

ill make sure there is plenty of other hiding places so other fish can keep out the way if they start breeding

That's right. Normally a cave for each cichlid so it's easy to defend without taking over half the tank.

well i stole your great idea and made a small cave out of slate going to make a couple of bigger ones when i get more sealant

Laurahobson - Just thought I'd quickly point out that the likely reason that your german blue ram is poorly is because it isnt suited to your tank. GBR's are quite difficult to look after due to their specific requirements. They require a low PH in the region of 5.5 - 6.0 with a higher than usual temperature ranging from 28-32 celcius which makes them unsuitable tankmates for most tropical fish that do not appreciate these parameters. Also GBR's are intolerant to nitrates higher than 20ppm. When kept in conditions outside of these parameters you'll be lucky if they survive longer than a couple of months.


Ashley-Laura, a few good centrepiece fish for your tank could be:

Pair of bolivian rams
Trio of Cockatoo Apistogrammas
A pair or trio of the larger gourami species

yeah and its fun making them going to make 2 bigger ones to go along side the smaller one i just made

thanks for your suggestions ill check them out now

already decided i want 3 or 4 cockatoos guessing my tank will still be understocked so ill look into your other suggestions to (dont want a overstocked tank but dont want it to undesrtocked)

as for the sort of fish i like since cichlids got mentioned i have fallen in love with how alot of them look!

i also love tetra and going to get a shoal in about 6 month when my tank is more mature not decided what sort yet though

The cockatoos are a nice colourful centrepiece fish

How about a shoal of harlequin rasboras or hengal rasboras? The are a hardy fish and would be fine in a newly cycled tank.

they are very pretty but i prmoised the gf some sort of tetras that she can pick ill make her a shortlist and she picks the one she likes best lol

i dont mind waiting the 6 months my gf wants to help me set up my old tank as a breeding tank when this one is finished cycling and i have more experiance
