Hey everyone,

I just bought 3 Red Minor Serpae fish, for my small fish tank in my room. I got some pants and a rock with a cave in there. I've had them for about 4 days now. I have a few questions becuase I have never owned fish before.

1) The lady at the store told me to feed them once a day. That dosnt seem very much. So I have been feeding them as much as they can eat in 3 minutes twice a day. Once in the morning and once at night. Is this ok? How much should I feed them?

2) They seem to be like angry or somthing. Theyre like nipping at eachother. They frist 2 days they would swim around togeater or chill in the plants. But now they are all seperated, and dart at eachother very quickly. I dont know if they are playing or biteing eachother. They dosnt seem to be getting hurt from it.

3) When do I have to clean the tank? Once a week? And how do I clean it? Do I put the fish in another bowl for alittle bit and empty out the real one or somthing?

Please help.
Thanks alot.

Hiya Ilikefish,

1 - once a day is fine, overfeeding is worse than underfeeding

2 - that's because they're shoaling fish, they need to be kept in a relativley large group, 6 is the minimum, 8-10 would be better. They're not happy as they are so you need to get some more and hopefully it should either calm down, or there will be enough of them to spread the agression around so no 1 fish gets bullied.

3 - here's a pinned topic about tank maintenance have a read of it and post back if you've any questions.

and a couple of questions for you, how did you prepare the tank before adding fish? Do you know about the nitrogen cycle?

Thank you very much for the help.
I had some directions when I set up the tank beucase I bought a kit that came with instructions, and oxygen tube thing, and a light. I added the right about of Nitrogen to the tank it told me how much.
thanks again, I may have to get one more fish to add to the tank so they dont fight anymore like you said.

I dont know if the aggression will stop, but spreading the aggression out is your best bet. Many tetras have a hierarchy that they enforce.
