Hi folks, I mainly do salt water aquariums at the moment, although I started out with freshwater. Still, I felt like making a freshwater planted tank. I need some help on getting on the right direction for plants and the substrate, I assume would be soil, and the lighting. Also I remember seeing some tanks that had c02 tanks fed directly to the soil for the plants. Is this necessary? I'm planning on it being a 10g planted with one betta.

I would go with a nutrient rich substrate, 2wpg lighting, fire extinguisher co2 and a bottle of TPN+ that should give you plenty of options.

Thanks for the reply. I have a bunch of 20w lighting that will work for the 10g. Is co2 necessary for plants, or is it only for certain plants? And could you fill me in a little on what TPN+ is and what it is used for?

Co2 is only absolutely necessary when you get to 2wpg and above. TPN+ is a plant fertilizer made by tropica. It is used to give the plants the nutrients they need to stay healthy.

Is the TPN+ necessary? My plants seem to do pretty well, even thought I think my grass could be doing a little better.

And yes I would recommend co2 anyways since your plants will grow more with it. Pretty simple set up (especially if your a ten gallon like me), and since the tank is smaller diy co2 will do just fine (and its cheap).

But then again if your adventurous and like complicated stuff like me then you might have fun with the fire extinguisher setup....

Your plants may be doing pretty well now, but theyd be doing even better if they had the right nutrients.
