I've been having strange aquarium problems lately...I had ammonia problems in my tank (10 gallon) about 3 weeks ago and i had a lot of fish die, including a plecostamus, 3 guppies, a white skirt tetra, and 3 neons. all of these fish were new (i bought them all within a week of each other, not the same day) except the skirt tetra and a guppy, and I don't know if it was due to the ammonia because they started dying shortly after I brought 3 new fish home. the ammonia levels were high then, but I had the water tested again and they said everything looks good. then I got 2 guppies and 4 more neons and all except 1 neon has died.

now a couple of the other neons look kind of pale and ...they seem to be dying randomly. they guy at the pet store told me that the skirt tetras could be killing off the guppies/neons, but I have never seen them touch the neons, and I have always kept the same 2 kinds of fish together and have never had a problem. (also, I don't think a white skirt tetra would have killed two large guppies!!) I realize that sometimes neons can be fragile, but this is just weird.

Id say too many fish in a short space of time, if you want to save your neons id recommend 1)Give them away untill your cycled 2)Do plenty of regular water changes to keep the ammonia down :)

also invest in a test kit yourself, the LFS (local fish store) normally say anything to sell there fish, even if they die the next day

thanks...I did a water change this morning and the neons look like they're getting better already! and yeah i'm going to hold off on buying new fish for a while.

so is it completely safe to keep skirt tetras and neons together?

What is your tanks water capacity?

Bad advice from the lfs.
Neons really need mature tanks of 6 months.
The skirt tetras the tanks to small need at least 20 gallons.
Research the fish before you buy them this way you will stock your tank properly.
Read up on the cycling of a tank in beginners or the net.
Increase aeration with bad water quality.
