Hi guys this is my first posting i have recently recieved a fish tank from a relatives dead relitive, all 6 ft of it (sweeet), i have had a 4 ft before but had to get rid of it because i decided to be a chef and had no time. now i am starting again i was in need of a bit of help.

if you would be so kind to help. i really do not want to use a fluvel as i feel in a large community tank it will be huge and ugly i was thinkin ofs goin 2 undergravel filters both 4ft air thingys i cant see that bein a problem in a 6fter. i hear things about sumps are they worth it and can anyone explain it in a fashion that i could understand if its worth it of course.

please any help is great help

before you can decide on filtration you need to decide what fish you are going to keep.

Then you need to find out what your fish's special needs are e.g plants ground space, retreats . then you can base your ornaments around that info.

thanks so far i was thinkin bout a comunity tank with neons, gouramis ,angels, ancistrus or pleco, bala shark, red tailed black shark, guppys plattys that kinda thing planting will be plenty of live plants couple bits o drift wood couple of rocks etc i havent bought yet still plannin and very open to ideas wsant to make this a beutiful tank with sexy clear water

I've got a 6 foot 150 gallon that I've had for around 2 months that I'm getting ready to set up as a community tank. I'm going to be running two fluval fx5's. Right know I have one getting the second in a couple weeks. I strongly recommend these filters. If you decide to go this route let me know and I can tell you a very cheap way to double the water presure that comes out of the outlet which gives you way more water circualtion that you will need for a tank that size! :good:

A sump isnt really needed for freshwater. They are are mainly only used for marine tanks, because marine tanks need 38 different filters etc  You could get a filter in the corner and hide it with dense planting, or you could put a large rock in the corner, which hides it and also gives the fish a little cave (thats what i have done and my wee little rainbow shark loves it. Also about getting neons, im not sure if your aware, but many people are kinda against them as they are VERY prone to dropsy, and popeye sometimes, many people have gone for cardinal tetras, which look rather similar, but are just that little bit more expensive. If you wanted "sexy clear water" i would invest in a UV filter. They are kinda expensive, but i had 1 tank which had algal bloom, and bacterial bloom, and green algae EVERYWHERE on the glass, and the only way i could get rid of it was a UV filter. Some people say cut down on light a few hours, which is rubbish, and some say put a blanket over it and keep the lights off for about 3-5 days, which i dont recommend, because all it did was kill all my plants, but didnt kill the algae.
Hope this helps.
