My roomate and i are looking into setting up a 55 gal tank, we are very fond of both the monos and scats. My question is i have heard people on here say that they absolutely need brackish water, and at the same time others say they have had scats live completly salt free for 10 years. The question is important because if we are also interested in having a Black Ghost Knife and a Fire eel so they would not be compatable with the salt. Please let me know any opinions you guys have, and also just about the companionship between the monos and scats and if that would work. thanks!

Monos and Scats are definately brackish fish. I believe they can get by in Freshwatere while younger but need salt added to their water as they mature. While they may be able to survive in freshwater, they will be far more succeptible to illness and disease and will not be being kept in the proper conditions.

due to there full grown size and needing to be in groups your going to need atleast a 80 gallon to house a couple of each so they have plenty of swimming space.

in a 55 it's not big enough to house a fire eel although you can house peacosk spiney eels.
