Hi

my cichlid has eggs in its mouth, i think is a Kenyi but im not to sure. It keeps geting eggs in its mouth but they never hatch. is there an thing i can do to help? like turn up the heat a ltttle bit or does the male still need to fertilze the egg?

Jamie :good:

Can you get a photo to ID the fish ?

At the time of the female releasing the eggs, the male will have released his stuff to fertilize the eggs (spawning)... she picks up the eggs and 'his stuff' in her mouth, and they get fertilized in there (her mouth). Later she should spit out those eggs that are not fertilized... But she hold for about 2-4weeks depending on species.

Keep in mind ... alot of females fail their first attempt buy either spitting out to early or simply eating them.

Ok, it dont look like a female Kenyi to me ... female Kenyi's are blue with dark blue stripes. Im not sure what it could be tbh.

I'm not entirely convinced that's a kenyi either, IME females do sometimes lose a lot of their color when holding. I think it may be to signal to the others that she's no longer available, but don't quote me on that. I'm still not sure it's a kenyi though.

Whatever she is, are you sure there are males in the tank? Sometimes when there are only females, they'll drop eggs and hold them anyways. Because they aren't fertilized, they'll eventually either swallow or spit them. And sometimes even when males are present, it takes a few tries to get the holding process right. Some females never do, I have a lab that has never had a viable batch, even though she keeps trying.

My advice is to just let nature take it's course, either she'll figure it out or not. I don't think there's much you can do about it.

I strip my female of hers 8-9 days after she holds them. This way they are already emerging from their egg sacks and squirming around.
Here is a pic of my kenyi
