Hi

My Fish are dying.

They're covered in tiny white spots, which look like a fungus-y type. a bit like minute patches of fur.

started with my mollies, and now my guppies have it. Most seem fine with it, but theyre starting to die, I lost 3 mollies today.

i got some stuff from pet shop for finrot. thats what they said it was, but it seems to have made it worse (coincidence..?)

its a fairly new tank, 3 weeks up, with water treated and the filter start in, and PH is fine

Help!

Sounds liike the dreaded whitespot, do the fish look like they have been sprinkled in salt.
When left untreated the spots will join up and can look abit fluffy.

HIya

No they don't look like salt, but they are tiny spots, and lots of them.

what can i do about this?

I just done a 25% water change, checked PH again, and treated with the anti fungal i have. I have lost 4 mollies today now.

Some say size of a grain of sugar as well.
Can you post a pic.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Never treat a tank till you know what you are treating for.

Thanks for that, most of its gone right over my head though

I think it may be ich, but i cannot take photo's, my camera just isn't good enough. Is there a site which has photo's of this so i can see if it looks the same?

I treated, as my petshop told me when i described it, it was fungal, and sold me the stuff.

all fish, except one are swimming fine, I havent seen any scraping, or itching.

Columnaris can look fluffy it goes along the back and down the sides of the fish to from a saddle shape thats why its name called saddle back columnaris.
Velvet another parasite looks like the fish has been sprinkled in talc..
Are your fish gasping at the top of the tank.

I would not use the cheap medications you can buy in the supermarkets etc. Seriously, if you can buy it in a supermarket for five bucks you can imagine how effective it's going to be.

It sounds like ich to me too (also called whitespot), you need good quality antifungal medication. I've never had a tank infested with ich so I haven't had to experiment. I'm sure there are loads of people on here who can recommend a good one. It might be expensive but it might save your fish. If the fish have white spots it doesn't sound like finrot.

I hope for your sake that Wilder is wrong and it's not columnaris. Columnaris sucks, it's very hard to treat and is rapidly and invariably fatal. Good luck with your fish.

Yes it is white spot.

Whats the best way to treat this?

Thanks everyone for your answers so far

I've an outbreak of white spot before.

Get an anti white spot formula from your local pet store. You could also try turning the temp up by a few degrees after you have given the treatment as this speeds up the white spot life cycle.

The treatment kills the white spot bacteria in its reproductive phase so increasing the temp can speed the infection to this stage and then kill it.
Firstly check that none of your fish are sensitive to white spot treatment and if you have a carbon filter you will have to remove it whilst you dose the fish as the carbon will remove the medication from the water
Hope that helps.

Andy

I still have whitespot

My fish are slowly dying. I have treated with anti white spot no; 6, and upped temp. also kept the lights out most of the time to minimise stress, and increased areation.

I don't know what to do, I have quite a few young, they don't seem affected at all. I am going to set up a quarrentine tank on monday, and seperate the babies. I might be lucky with them. I already have a seperate tank with some new fish in, that i am not going to put in the big one (with the white spot)

What can I do? If all my fish die, how can i disinfect the tank to get rid of this?
