Help - Tropical Fish Tank

i'm no fish expert so i dont know how you would think i would know the needs of my fish

up to now all my fish have been perfectly fine none of them have had any issue and all seem healthy

my other fish are:

i cant be sure what these are as most come with the tank

internet research....

Female and male Platy
Black /silver angelfish
Tuxedo Sword

and have 2 others that i dont know the name of

fairly small fish which is grey and has red highlights on its tail and fins

the next one looks similar to a Dawrf Gourami
and the other is a fairily large fish with an odd large tail its grey with small silver spots

there is also a sucker fish

i have my lights on for 8 hours a day timed so the tank lights are on when the kids come home from school and go off when i go to bed. I had a problem with algea but it was on the glass so i just got an algea scruder (basically a stick with a razor blade on the end) to scrude it off with. i dont need to do that as much anymore because i seem to have quite a snail population growing !

As for algae on the bottom there are syphon/ vaccume's that you can use to clean the gravel with.

EDIT - your sucker fish should help with the eating of algae btw

thanks for the info

i thought the sucker fish would help

i got the sucker fish/ snails and two other sucker eal things to help with the elgae but they dont seem to help too much
i must have too much

i will look into getting one of those vaccumes

"i'm no fish expert so i dont know how you would think i would know the needs of my fish"

same as the rest of us; internet forums, books, research, before you buy!!!!!

It's just good practice to research a fish before buying it, just in case it is incompatible with your existing fish or your tank ;).

As the others have said, decrease the lighting time and scrub it off every week and it should become manageable. We all get algae from time to time, you just need to keep on top of it before it gets out of hand :good:.

Do you have any live plants in your tank? If not, you don't need the lights on at all, just for when you want to look at the tank. Otherwise, 8 hours would be your best bet.

What is the "sucker fish"? This fish at worst could be a Chineese Algae Eater or a Sailfin Plec, both of which should reach 45cm long. Not all fish with sucker mouths are algae eating vegetarians, there are many common hobby species that are carnivores, for instance Panda Garras and Butterfly Loaches search for "auchwuchs" (tiny critters) that live on the algae covered rocks.

"Sucker eal"? I don't even know what to suggest what this ambiguous common name might be.

You should never buy fish without knowing their needs beforehand and what to expect in terms of diet, adult size and aggression... Do not go on the fish shop labelling and/or the shop staff alone, sadly all sorts of misinformation is given out or provided to make a sale.

Platties and Swordtails are active livebearers just like my Limones Goodeids (Ilyodon xantusi), two days ago I upgraded my nine ~3.5cm youngsters from a 60cm tank to a 120cm peaceful community.

Angelfish need a tank that has at least 45cm of water depth (60cm depth is even better), because adult specimens are deep bodied fish and shallow waters will distort their classic body shape.

"2 small eal things" need food, every living thing needs a food source!

Red Tailed Black Sharks need at leat 120cm long tank and a carfeul choice of tankmates, especially at the tank bottom. I susupect your "2 small eal things" are something like Kuhli Loaches which stand no chance against the shark-minnow.

A Black Ghost Knife Fish needs a tank of at least 200cm because of its 50cm adult size.

Get that tank upgrade (at least a 120x45x45cm for now, but this will need upgrading to 200x60x60cm) or rehome virtually all your fish and start again with proper research, your tank is heading for [background=rgb(255, 255, 255)]http://www.ebay.co.u...=item2a27e8504b[/background]
