Any advice on the following would be really appreciated!

We have a thriving fish tank that's been up and running for about 6 months. After moving into a bigger house about 2 months ago we decided to set up our old tank also.

Our first batch of fish in the new tank were guppies and a plec, unfortunately after only 48 hours they suddenly started dying, no warning, literally a nose dive followed by death. We put it down to a bad batch, all but one guppy died. So we did water changes over a period of days, the remaining guppy still alive.

After a couple of weeks later we bought another batch of guppies and a plec, from another centre that we've used several times, all seemed well, one even graced us with 20 babies on it's first night. But again after about 48 hours they started to die again, starting with the original remaining guppy!

We've done water tests, even moved water from our thriving tank, but they just keep dying and always suddenly. One moment they're fine, the next it's a nose dive and straight to the bottom of the tank.

The plec has been moved to our main tank, as have the babies in a hatchery, all are completely fine. It just seems anything we put in the other tank seems to die.

I would really like to keep guppies in this second tank but it's seeming almost impossible. We can not work out where we're going wrong.

Any idea?

Many thanks in advance!

Was the tank cycled before you added the fish.
How many gallons is the tank.
How many fish and which type.

If the tank hasnt been cycled guppies were a poor choice,
from my experience inbreeding for colour strains has caused
guppies to be fairly fragile.

Adding a plec to a new tank also seems a bad idea,
as a new tank lacks the natural algae they feed upon
In the aquarium, though sinking algae pellets can remedy this

Why would it lack algae. In all tanks I have seen it seems to grow pretty quickly especailly now its summer time.
