So I just got back from a few day trip and I noticed dozens of baby snails along my glass. I had several nirate snails, and I noticed one of them laying eggs (not sure which) but I thought the eggs couldn’t actually hatch unless the water was brackish?? This is a purely freshwater tank. The only time, if ever, I added salt to this particular tank was at least two months ago and I’ve done many hefty water changes since then? So I’m not sure if my water is somehow salty enough for them to hatch or I had a pest snail in here and didn’t realize till just now? After it reproduced enough to dot all over the front of my tank? It’s a 29 gallon that’s about 3 or so months old. I thought it was snail poop until I noticed that all these dots had mouths that were actively munching.
I have an assassin snail, but can I put him in there with my adult nirates? Or should I take the adults out and just let my assassin snail, Crunch, go ape? I don’t want them to mess up my filter, which I’ve heard is a common problem. I wouldn’t mind just letting them be (I’ve got more than enough algae) if it wasn’t for their penchant for breaking filters that I’ve heard about. The filter is an aqua clear 30.
Edit: this particular rank had a bad algae problem so last week I took out and scrubbed most of the decorations and thoroughly vacuumed the gravel and didn’t see any baby snails in my dirty water or the decorations I scrubbed. I didn’t scrub a big log I had in there so that the good bacteria wouldn’t be completely lost and it had and still has white eggs dotted along it. But the baby snails are a very new development. And there are many.
