Have you looked into doing a fishless cycle? It's a good way to get the tank filter ready to cope with fish waste.

Here is the link - http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=113861

And here is a link to working out how much ammonia to add - http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm

cheers for your help

No problem at all. If you've got any other questions then get back to the board and someone more intelligent/knowledgeable than me will sort you out

The first couple of things to think about before fishless cycling are the general startup topics (I think Miss Wiggle has an article about that in the Beginners Resource Center) and then the filter itself. Its important to learn how filters work, to consider what type of filter you can afford or want and then to size the filter properly. Then you have to choose the proper media to put in the filter and once all that's been done right you are ready to start on the topic of Fishless Cycling.

If you're a beginner it all sounds ridiculous but, in fact, this forum is a dream come true usually for beginners if they bother to let themselves be guided by the members, as these same members have usually worked it all out the hard way prior.

what size fish tank do you want?

if you want tell us what your want like a community with lots of little (or big) fish that school and behave nicely or a species tank with just one species in it, or cichlid community, or predator tank, it depends on your final goal.

Hi and welcome to TFF! Yes, most of our members have been through what you are about to go through, and they can offer advice. The best thing you can do is to read the topics in The Beginners Resource Center. Everything you need to know about setting up a tank, and the mechanics of how the nitrogen cycle work is in that topic. It's a lot of information to absorb, but most of it is vital information that you need to understand. If you have any questions, post here in the Your New Freshwater Tank section and hopefully someone who knows the answer will pop in and answer it for you.
