Hiya,

I got our first tank Christmas Eve 2005 and OMG I love my fish! Husband thinks i'm sad and mad - but hey! Current tank is 96 litres plastic plants (lol) but did change the substrate last week to sand instead of the gaudy blue gravel. Fish are VERY happy thank goodness.

Anyway I am getting a new tank at the weekend... a Juwel 240 and I want to try my hand at having a planted tank. The pictures of planted tanks on here are very inspiring - they are all gorgeous!

Soooo.... I really haven't got a clue - please can you advise me what I need to do right from the very beginning - substrate etc etc... or point me in the right direction where I will find this information...

Looking forward to getting started - have already moved my lounge around ready to house a new 4 foot tank LOL.

Thanks,

Lesley

Welcome to the forum Lesley :hi:

Suggest you start by reading the pinned threads especially the Estimative Index and lighting ones, they should give you a good starting point. Then if you find you've got some questions after them post them up and I'm sure people (including me where i can ;)) will help along the way.

Hi Lesley,

take a look at a few of peoples journals, many of them are a real mine of information. Especially as most describe the journey from the very beginning to the point at which people are really getting great results!

I know that my own journaling thread has been really useful (for me at least!)...I refer back to it quite often myself when I forget things!

Themuleous suggestions about the pinned threads is a good one...there is some great info there. If your anything like me, you'll be suprised at how technical some of these tanks can get...in fact many people will suggest it's harder to keep the plants than the fish! Get the basics right though and you'll be fine...don't panic when you read through the EI article either...it can be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but longer term many people here think it's the way to go.

Best of luck,

ND
