The pump in my tank broke, whilst i was working away for the weekend, my unknowing girlfriend washed it under the tap thinking it was blocked (!i!) and left it out. ive had to buy a new pump for my tank and now i am very concerned about the amonia levels getting too high and endangering the fish, apart from regular water changes what els can anyone suggest i do to keep my fish alive?? i dont really want to use medication but the man at our local TFC said i would struggle with the amount of fish we have. any advice & help would be much appreciated!

Tank size:36 x 18 x 12
pH: 7
tank temp: 73f
2 plecs
5 neon
3 clown loach
2 red crabs
2 albino frogs
3 guppies

I had my pump break on Friday just gone too and so far all the fish seem to have survived the trauma.

The seal had gone and it was leaking water. The water level had dropped about 2 inches on my 22 gal tank. Then I went and bought a new fluval external pump from a lfs but it was missing a part. This was late friday night so there was nothing I could do. I returned the pump on Saturday morning and got a refund cos they had no more in stock.

I then went to another lfs and bought an internal pump. Set everything up yesterday lunchtime and fingers crossed everyone seems asap.

Because I bought an internal pump I had to do some re-organising of the tank and I was worried the fish would be stressed out.

The lady I bought the internal filter from seemed very positive that everything would be OK. I checked the water last night and everything seemed not too bad. The ammonia had risen slightly but only just.

I have everything crossed for you, hopefully both our tanks will be OK and not suffer any casualities.

thanks dude!

they seem ok and amonia levels are @ 0 so i'l just keep checking over next couple of weeks!
Hope yours are ok too! :D

i had one of my filters break on me, i just whacked in a whole bottle of stresszyme and nothing died lol :D

when you say pump do you mean internal filter?? if yes try parting the filter case away from pump section..then look how to open pump section to find the impeller..once youve located this try carefully to remove impeller<its magnetic so tap into your hand gently should come enough to pull it out<now clean it ridding the gunk..and replace carefully.......this should work if no<use some thing like a straw or small screwdriver to flick impeller<be careful itll flick round quickly so be ready to remove screw driver........this is what happened with me last night and it worked........................hope it helps

if your concerned ask man in lfs to look after you fish til alls good.........do you have another tank?if yes try to use a little of sponge from that 1 to use in new 1 :S

Think about adding another filter to your tanks. A Aquaclear HOB is a nice one that does not cost a bunch. This way there is always a back up if needed.

All my fish are still fine with no casualities.

In fact my silver molly had babies last night so all appears well. !
