A week ago I moved my shoal of celestial pearl danios to a different tank. I went on vacation for a week and just returned to find a large number of fry swimming around the tank from which I removed the adults! The only other residents in there are cherry shrimp. This tank has a large amount of java moss as the only plant. Can the fry survive on the same type of bio-film items that the shrimp eat, or should I buy something such as Hikari first bites? Right now the fry are about 5 mm and very skinny.

Here is a quick video I uploaded of the fry.

Congrats on the fry, they have almost certainly been feeding on the bio film and little critters in your moss. Hard to say if they are big enough for BBS or microworms. A small pieace of egg yoke mashed up in a little aquarium water is one thing they will be able to eat. It does make a bit of a mess though but hopefully your shrimp would take care of that. Other than that I suppose any type of fry food would do. I'd feed it to them using a turkey baster or similar so as not to leave too much uneaten. Do you have a lot of shrimp in there?

No I am down to about 10 shrimp in the 10 gallon. Used to have a lot more. I think the CPDs were eating all the baby shrimp, which is one reason I moved them out to see if the shrimp could recover or not. Egg yolk - I will try that and see how it does. Thanks!

Gorgeous fish!!  You are lucky.

Would you sell some?

One advantage of egg yolk is you can see if they have eaten it as their bellies will be yellow.

Cooledwhip - I would not ship fish. But would be happy to give some away for local pick up! I'm in SC.

I fed them some egg yolk yesterday - I think it worked some what. I saw some of the fry darting through the cloud and could see yellow going into their bellies.I will try again tonight.

I hope this batch survives. They might have been an accident, but once I found them I feel protective!
