Female bettas were my first fish!
I had a pair in my community and were absolutely fine until they died of natural causes 7 years later. Was I just lucky?

I would say you were pretty lucky

It's all good Paradise, just wanted to make sure the thread starter knew they didn't have to add females to the group.  I do agree that 3 is too few is they do decide to go the group route, since a larger group is needed to spread the aggression.  It's far too easy for the weakest one to get bullied by the stronger ones.

I know, I understand. It just sort of felt like the other people(I quoted you because you were the last one to post it

) were saying "Do not keep them in a group at all" which the OP doesn't have to listen to, right? It is the OP's tank and if they decide to go for a group then they should be fine aslong as(like you say) they go for 5 not 3

Exactly, either alone or in a group of 5 or more.  The tank is a bit small for 5 of them unless they are the only fish in it.  Not that the tank couldn't handle them, but that they'd constantly feel confined without enough space to make their own territories.
IMO a female Betta sorority would be much more interesting than a bunch of Black Widow Tetras, which grow a little too big for that tank anyway.

The tank should be OK. I was told 7 females in a 2ft tank before as it's slightly better to overstock with female betta's due to aggression just like Malawi's :)

But I agree, Black Widow's get too big for that tank and 5 female betta's but be a lot more suited and much more interesting due to all the different colours you can get :)
