BOTH heaters in my two tanks have malfuntioned whilst I was at the cinema this evening and all my dwarf puffers have been boiled to death and in my community tank all barbs and my yellow and blue labs are dead... catfish looking very worse for wear.

Still alive in my community tank are a silver shark and my pleco.. they look fine. Water is scorching to touch and the light showing the heater is still heating is on even though both heaters are still set at 26 degrees celcius. Whichever way i try and lower or higer the temp the light stays on... i dont understand whats happened.

Any ideas on my remaining fish :( I feel so sorry for them... its like a fish graveyard in there.

Help :(

mine did the same thing :( I just unplugged the heater and did a water change. I added slightly cooler water. The water cooled down in about an hour or so.

2 Heaters in 2 separate tanks malfunction at the same time?

Thats seems like a horrendous coincidence which got me thinking, are heaters (more so than other electrical equipment) more prone to power surges which could cause this malfunction? I use surge protected extensions for all of my computer, gaming, Hi Fi and TV's as I wouldn't want to damage expensive equipment, but it never occurred to me to do the same on my aquarium. Does anyone protect their equipment in this way? Is it recommeded?

Really wouldn't want to suffer in the same way as miss limber

Sorry about you losses.
