Hi all.
We have a bright orange Platy that seems to just be sitting and doing nothing, it is constantly opening and closing it's mouth too.
She never used to be like this, she used to be lively and swimming around all the time.

She does seem to be eating though, as when we put food in she will see some dropping and go get it then she just goes back to doing nothing. Yesterday she was always at the top of the tank but today she always been down near the gravel. She doesn't look pregnant at all so don't think it's anything like that.

Does anyone have any suggestions on why she might be doing this? Hope it's nothing major!

Oh she is the only fish doing this too, the rest seem fine but she has been like this for two to three days now.

Thanks,
Anthony & Amy

It could possibly dropsy. I had a female platy showing the same signs a few weeks ago. She then stopped eating and got a bit bloated and her scales were protruding. Hopefully its not this but its possible.

Hi again, just done a little research on this 'Dropsy'. Our Platy doesn't seem to have a swollen abdomen or anything like that, I think we might be coming down with White spot as there are a couple of white dots on her and she has started to get a bit fin rot.

We have added 'Anti White Spot' into the tank today and then we have to add more on day 4, I just hope that we can get this problem sorted before anymore fish die or catch this white spot thing..

Thanks for your reply!

Hopefully you can get this sorted. How long have you had the fish? Not very good if they have white spot soon after purchasing them.

Had them for around 2 weeks now.

She seems a little bit better today even though alot of her tail is rotting, she is swimming round a little more and seems a little more active.

May be worth contacting your fish shop as they shouldn't be diseased like that.

You might want to try a few huge water changes eldraW. Often a problem of the fins not being quite right an be attributed to poor water quality. I am no disease expert but find that frequent large water changes can give my fish the chance to heal themselves. It is not a perfect solution by any means but can often give me the healthy surviving fish that I am after.

Well unfortunately, last night she passed away, she seemed to be getting much better with fins growing back and swimming around lots more but again she stopped yesterday.

We seen her float up to the top of the tank and then swim to the floor, we looked back 5 minutes later and she was upside down :(.

RIP.

We did do the water changes and what not but not huge ones as we were medicating white spot so didn't know weather it was a good idea to or not as nothing was said in the instructions.

Thanks for the help though and information.
