Well it started with the purchase of my first sponge filter. It was a full size one and I bought a second one since I loved it so much. Now the sponge filter bug has bitten me and I'm buying sponge filters for everything!!! Not even the hospital tank will be spared!! :shout:

I have sponges in some tanks, box filters in others, canisters in a few of the larger ones and lots of hang on back, HOB, filters. All of them do much the same thing. They circulate the water, remove ammonia and nitrites and oxygenate the water by that circulation. If you are running lots of tanks, a central air source with sponges or box filters in each tank makes sense. If you have fry, both of those filters produce a gentle enough circulation to spare the fry. If you are one who worries about getting 5x or more flow, stick with power filters, no air driven filter will ever give you that kind of flow.

You can get 5x turnover with a really large pump & large box filters. The downside being your tank will look & sound like a large cauldron of boiling water. I run mainly sponge & box filters, a few canisters & power filters still kicking around though, mainly on tanks outside the fishroom.
